Dark Green Cabinetry

we are about to get dumped on today with snow but while the weather people make a HUGE deal about it, it's honestly not looking that bad. kind of ironic because my maryland roots still hear 3" and think 😱 but here in massachusetts, that's considered a dusting and even 8" is cleared pretty quickly. my bet is that it will all melt pretty quickly because we're supposed to be in low 40s the rest of the week. the only real issue is that there is early dismissal in my town for schools. luckily my afternoon appointment is with a client who we are also friends with and i can bring the boys!

anywho! or anyhoodle as a friend of mine from minnesota says! if you've followed my laundry room progress on stories, you know that i'm struggling (massive understatement) with cabinetry paint color choice. ever since the flooring went in, i can NOT get this idea of dark green cabinetry out of my head. the flooring is 3x12 black honed slate laid in a herringbone pattern and i'm so happy with it.

i was laying in bed one night mulling over paint colors - honestly i have some of my best ideas right before falling asleep! - and dark green popped in my mind. i think it would look awesome with the brass hardware, slate floors, and white paneled walls. but it's a risk because i don't normally go for dark colors. and what if i get sick of it down the road? but since i can't stop thinking about it, i rounded up some images of dark green cabinetry for us all to drool over!

MRD Favorite Paint Colors

happy new year!! you know it's been a while when you almost forget your password to log in to the blog!! but i'm back! and with a renewed excitement for sharing projects, ideas, and thoughts here. thanks for sticking with me.

i've been meaning, for a while now, to post a small round up of some favorite paint colors that i come back to time and again. this is by no means an all inclusive list but these are colors that are tried and true keepers. one thing i want to mention is that, regardless of the color, i always recommend picking a shade that on the paint strip looks a little "dirty" or "muddy". sometimes this scares people but the pretty ones never end up looking sophisticated. long before i realized my passion for design, i picked a color for our bedroom in our first apartment and we might as well have been living in a swimming pool. but it looked so pretty on the chip! so learn from my mistakes and i think you'll see that all of my picks below are a bit dirty. :)

white dove: this color is throughout my house on trim and on walls. it's soft and warm but still reads "white" without feeling stark.

simply white: this color is on my basement walls. i wanted to try something a little different and to me, this white reads a little whiter than white dove but is still soft. this color can really go anywhere - walls, trim, cabinetry and even exteriors.

classic gray: i used this color in our master bedroom and it is so clean.

wind's breath: this color seems to be really hot at the moment BUT i found it and used it before its recent fame. we did a whole home this past fall in this shade and it's the perfect compromise between a warmer gray but without it going too tan.

fieldstone: i am loving this shade for cabinetry and also in the right color scheme, i think it could be a pretty exterior door color!

greyhound: this is the color that i'm planning for my laundry room cabinetry! i love how moody it is and how it can read so differently in different light. consider it on doors and exterior shutters too!

chelsea gray: this is a tried and true medium, warm gray. i used it in the plain road project dining room console that we had custom made.

cape may cobblestone: i used this color on the inside of our front door and love how it turned out. it would be fab on kitchen cabinetry too.

kendall charcoal: i chose this color for our basement built ins for a change of pace (and paired it with simply white walls). it's a great way to add some drama when keeping everything else simple.

hale navy: on the surface, this color isn't very "pretty" but in reality it's beautiful! i used it on the inside of a front door to spice up an entry and it was perfect. hale navy can work on walls, doors, and cabinetry. it could even be a cool statement-maker on millwork.

downpipe: this is another color that bridges a couple of shades - specifically navy and gray - depending on the light. it's moody and dark in the very best way.

hunter green: dark green is IN but at the same time feels classic to me. i'm always careful not to choose a shade that goes too yellowy. this might be the perfect shade of deep green and i'm considering it on a bathroom cabinet in my own home!

Two Tone Paint

today i have two toned paint on the brain. jenny komenda, designer and diyer extraordinaire of little green notebook, recently wrote a great post on this exact topic. i love the look and i think i especially like it for kids spaces.

on closer inspection, this one isn't actually like the others since it looks like there's wainscoting on the bottom BUT i kind of love it regardless. you could just reverse the colors!

i think this one might be my favorite and was in jenny's line up too!

this one was from jenny's post too but i love it too - it feel like a very achievable look.

might be something fun to try since it's only paint. you on board?

What's Your Favorite Color?

welcome to the last day of november - ahhhh!! hopefully last week's gift guides have been helpful! so let's pretend we're in second grade for a minute! ;) i have a new favorite color, paint color really. and it's actually more of a non-color. but it can literally go anywhere and creates the perfect backdrop. drum roll pleeeease... silver satin from benjamin moore!

it's now the color of our kitchen and family room walls and as soon as it went on, i was immediately happy with it (which is saying something because that doesn't always happen!). our house isn't camera ready yet (although i'm dying to show you everything!!!) so i've rounded up a few spaces from pinterest that feature this color.

it's lighter than tried and true balboa mist and i'd say it's close to classic gray but slightly grayer. p.s. anyone take advantage of thanksgiving sales? it always ruins me because then i don't want to pay full price for anything again!

Scattered!

ok so monday came and went and i kinda sorta forgot to update you on the shiplap decision. thanks for the call out LGP! :) i ended up being asked to make a decision on friday afternoon - surprise - so i didn't do more wall-staring all weekend which is probably why it slipped my mind. that and i have three clients right now who are occupying my time - in a good way! hence why i'm feeling scattered. anyway i decided to stick with the original plan and not cover the whole entry. i felt like i needed to see it up first before going all in and if we really want to add it, we can in the future. so all is not lost :) and i feel at peace with the decision which i think means it was the right one. whew!

i spent last night debating paint colors and finishes for everything. i think i pretty much have that nailed down (famous last words). going with lots dove white and a charcoal color for the basement built ins. can't wait to see that one come to life! i'm also going to take this opportunity to paint the inside of the front door as well. why not?!

progress on monday - the installation of a bench seat at our kitchen table. surprise! this was a little add on that we threw in late in the game but i think such a great one. we debated adding seating on all sides of the bump out but in the end felt like 1. you would have to crawl around to get to the back and 2. it would likely necessitate a custom table and a pedestal which isn't my first choice for this space. here's the space pre-move in:

also got this nice text from the shop building our new powder room vanity. the paint was literally in the midst of drying! this will be such a vast improvement.

and that's all i have for you! today a kitchen backsplash is being ripped out at a client's house and in a week we should have beautiful new gray subway installed along with sleek new quartz counters. :) it's going to be a great before and after!

Construction Progress!

this was a very good week design-wise. lots of progress on our home updates which i'll get to in just a bit but first i was pretty proud to see that one king's lane regrammed my bedroom pic on their feed and it has over 3400 likes!! it's always nice to have that affirmation but then of course i started gushing about it to mr. r and he said something like "oh good". #geethanks #doesntgetit

also - i saw that benjamin moore named simply white as their color of the year which made me excited because it's the color i chose for our basement. i love the way it came out! the basement still isn't ready for its glamour shots but here are two past pics from instagram.

and finally, work in the house is really starting to come along! we have the new wall up dividing the kitchen and family room spaces, they installed the new mantle and the doors on the built ins, and the shiplap is almost finished around the built ins and fireplace! obviously nothing is painted yet.

they also started the shiplap on the stairs which is very fun to see become a reality!

and yes i'm still struggling over whether to continue the shiplap onto the other two walls in the entry or not. i have to make a decision by this weekend so i'll update you on monday. i know, you'll be dying with anticipation. ;) anyway have a great weekend! i'm looking forward to having no one but us in our house!!
